Job Opportunities For Chemical Engineering Graduates

Hi! I'm a current senior in high school and I'm about to graduate in May. For the most part, I have been applying to colleges as a chemical engineering major but UCSC does not have that major so I decided to apply to the BME major. I haven't gotten any admissions decisions yet and don't expect to till March, but my potential options have me torn. I'd like to go to UCD for chemical engineering as it's my top choice for the colleges that offer ChemE. But, I truly love the UCSC campus and I'm interested in the courses that BME has to offer. I'd probably end up choosing UCSC but I'd prefer to have a major in ChemE because of the wider range of job opportunities it provides. I'm not in love with ChemE job options like working with petroleum but I was hoping to do some form of graduate work to specialize in something more suited to my tastes (ex. pharmaceutical, food, clean energy, something along those lines). So, I'm asking for advice from BME majors on how much it is worth it to go into this major.

Hi all, just recently stumbled upon this wonderful subr and keen to engage frequently with it. I am currently in the UK working for a boutique TMT consulting firm and exploring opportunities in the East, particularly Shanghai. I have a background in Chemical Engineering, but have pursued a career in consulting since graduating (~2. 5 years ago). Due to personal reasons, I have been exploring the job market space in Shanghai for a while, but finding it difficult to gauge the feasibility and prospects. My questions are effectively the following: What is the likelihood of me landing a job within consulting wiht a similar pay (~£70k all-in)? Happy to hear your view on the consulting/finance/PE space in Shanghai and prospects for foreigners with HSK4 level Mandarin. If consulting is a no go, what other areas are highly in demand for multi-lingual foreigners? In retrospect, perhaps a career in Engineering would have been more attractive in China... Thanks for your inputs!

I'm about to turn 28 this year and I haven't had a full-time job ever, only internships and this is my only chance to graduate and try to get in as an FT employee at the government, but I am about to completely blow this up. Fuck I'm so stupid with my approach to life, sorry I realized this whole thing was just a rant.

Then March 2020 happened, and oil tanked to -$40/barrel and the CEO sent out hiring freezes and layoffs notices. I was not given the job and returned back home after gambling everything to get that O&G job. After some summer reflections, I decided that the O&G pipe dream (no pun intended) is over for good. I saw the opportunities of working as a developer, the desirables work locations, work from opportunities, and salaries so I convinced myself this is the path I will take. In the summer, I planned to graduate by April 2021 and in the meanwhile gain developer experience and get an FT job in the government as they are looking to hire. I applied during June 2020 and got an internship working for the Government as a Java developer starting Sept 2020 even though I can barely program in JAVA. I got through the interview by getting questions from my friends and memorizing common Java concepts (OOP, Abstract vs Interface, etc). I got an 8-month contract from them. Now I am 5 months into my internship and simultaneously doing 3 courses this semester (did 3 last semester) to complete my CS degree.
