We always love this zoo, and during the pandemic was no exception. Social distance markers a plenty, and "mask required" reminders posted. There are a few interactive kid spots and photo op spots closed currently, but major food stands, aquarium, rides, and sting ray bay all open. The current hours without a membership are noon to five during the week, and when we arrived around 1PM on a Thursday, we had no line at entry. The bees are starting to show themselves, but it's just that time of year in this area- they love all of the zoo's flowers! The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is divided into four distinct areas. The Central Zoo, home to such animals as California sea lions, barn owls, African penguins and Ring-tailed lemurs. The Australian Adventure houses such animals as black swans, Eastern grey kangaroos, dingoes and the rainbow lorikeets. Along the African Journey you can see lions, leopards, zebras and hyenas. Finally, the Indonesian Rain Forest features Javan gibbons, Sumatran tigers and Sumatran orangutans in unique habitats created especially for these and other creatures in this section. Staffers were able to trap the giraffe in a fenced parking lot in a non-public area of the zoo. Thabisa then decided to return to her enclosure by herself after more than two hours of freedom. In a statement, the zoo said: 'As many of you may know, our youngest giraffe Thabisa decided to have a little adventure today! 'Thanks for all of your concern for her safety, but after realizing our nonpublic parking lot outside the giraffe barn wasn't that exciting, she decided to go back into the barn all on her own. Slow down! Zoo spokeswoman Bonnie Kemp says the giraffe, Thabisa, never left the property Staff can be seen trying to coax the young animal out of the car park and back to her enclosure 'She remained on zoo property for the duration of her adventure, and is now resting safely behind the scenes. 'In all 40+ years of having giraffes here at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, nothing like this has ever happened before, but we will re-evaluate our giraffe exhibit and take extra precautions to ensure the continued safety of our animals and staff.
