An open shop is a place of employment at which one is not required to join or financially support a union ( closed shop) as a condition of hiring or continued employment. Open shop vs closed shop [ edit] The major difference between an open and closed shop is the requirement for union membership. [1] There are a variety of opinions regarding the benefits and negatives of open shops. Pros vs. cons of open shops [ edit] In the United States, the introduction of 'right to work' laws has been linked with lower overall benefits but higher economic growth by some proponents. [2] [3] [4] Such conclusions are debatable, however, as employment, investment, and income in traditionally unionized sectors of the economy cannot be correlated to passage of such laws. [5] [6] Union arguments [ edit] Open shop means a factory, office, or other business establishment in which a union, chosen by a majority of the employees, acts as representative of all the employees in making agreements with the employer, but in which union membership is not a condition of being hired.

When an employee has no incentives to do a better job they'll remain stagnant and unengaged. Rewarding Employees is Difficult Many employers offer incentive plans for high performing employees. The goal is to encourage struggling employees to become more productive, so they too can reap big rewards. Unfortunately, union contracts prevent incentive plans, making it difficult to reward your top performers and motivate your workforce. Collective Bargaining Agreements and the Union Shop A Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) sets the terms and conditions of employment in a union shop, such as: Wages Hours and working conditions Benefits Grievance and arbitration procedures Strike limitations Union's rights and responsibilities Company's rights and responsibilities Collective bargaining agreements run for a specified timeframe as outlined in the agreement. Unlike a regular contract, the parameters of the conditions don't end upon the agreement's expiration. As long as the majority of employees still support the union, union representatives and management are required to bargain in good faith for a new CBA.

Unions have argued against the open shop adopted by United States employers in the first decade of the twentieth century, seeing it as an attempt to drive unions out of industries. For example, construction craft unions have always relied on controlling the supply of labor in particular trades and geographical areas as a means of maintaining union standards and establishing collective bargaining relations with the employers in that field. In order to do that, unions argued, construction unions—and to a lesser extent unions representing musicians, longshore workers, restaurant employees, and others who work on a transitory and relatively brief basis—must require that employers hire only their members. The open shop was also a key component of the American Plan introduced in the 1920s. In that era the open shop was directed not only at construction unions but also unions in mass production industries. Unions again felt that these proposed policies would give employers the opportunity to discriminate against union members in employment and would also lead to a steadfast opposition to collective bargaining of any sort.

Cobots have several advantages which means that they can overcome the challenges traditionally associated with automation in a job shop: Quick and easy to reprogram — Cobots are inherently flexible which means that they do not reduce the flexibility of the overall job shop. Can do several tasks a day — You can move a cobot to a new workstation in a matter of minutes, which makes them as compatible with job shops as human workers. Especially good at batch processing — Even if you only incorporate a few batch processes, cobots can help to boost the performance of these tasks. You can introduce flow concepts incrementally, without disrupting the overall job shop model. Yes, job shops were traditionally a challenge for robots. But with collaborative robots, there is now no reason not to introduce automation into your machine shop, whether you have a job shop, a flow shop or something else entirely. Do you have a job shop, flow shop or something else? What concerns do you have about applying collaborative robots?
